U.S. President Donald Trump has called for an immediate halt to hostilities between Israel and Iran, expressing optimism that ongoing negotiations could pave the way for a broader peace agreement despite fresh exchanges of missile attacks that threaten regional stability.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said both Israel and Iran appear interested in implementing an immediate ceasefire while discussions aimed at achieving a lasting peace continue behind the scenes. He added that a blockade currently in place would remain fully enforced until a final agreement is reached, expressing confidence that diplomatic progress could happen quickly if political obstacles do not interfere.
The president’s comments came amid renewed military exchanges between the two longtime rivals. Hours after a ceasefire arrangement that had been in effect since April came under strain, both sides accused each other of escalating tensions through missile strikes and retaliatory operations.
Trump also publicly urged both nations to stop further attacks, emphasizing that continued military action could undermine efforts to secure a diplomatic breakthrough. His appeal followed reports of missile launches from Iran on Sunday evening, marking the first direct exchange of strikes between the two countries since the ceasefire began.
The latest escalation occurred after Israel announced that it had carried out strikes against Hezbollah-linked targets in southern Beirut. According to the Israeli Defence Forces, the operation was launched in response to rockets allegedly fired into Israeli territory by Hezbollah militants.
The developments have once again highlighted a major point of disagreement between the parties. Iran maintains that the ceasefire agreement negotiated with the United States and Israel should also extend to Lebanon, where Hezbollah operates. Israel, however, rejects that interpretation and insists that its military campaign against Hezbollah remains separate from any ceasefire arrangements involving Iran.
Adding to concerns about a wider conflict, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps described the recent missile attacks as the beginning of a sustained military campaign, signaling that tensions could intensify if diplomatic efforts fail to gain traction.
The exchange of attacks has raised fears across the region, with analysts warning that any further escalation could draw additional actors into the conflict and complicate ongoing peace efforts. Trump’s intervention reflects growing international pressure to prevent a broader confrontation and preserve the fragile diplomatic channels that remain open.
While negotiations continue, the situation remains highly volatile. Observers are closely watching whether the latest ceasefire push can withstand mounting military pressure and lead to a more comprehensive agreement capable of reducing tensions between Israel, Iran, and their regional allies.
