Football icon Kenny Dalglish has confirmed that he is currently receiving treatment for cancer, bringing an end to speculation that emerged after an accidental social media post revealed details of his health condition.
The 75-year-old Liverpool, Celtic, and Scotland legend disclosed the diagnosis in a public statement, explaining that he had originally intended to keep the matter private. However, after an unintended social media update drew public attention, Dalglish decided to address the situation himself.
Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, the former player and manager maintained his trademark sense of humor, reassuring supporters that his treatment has been progressing positively.
“As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer,” Dalglish said. “Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.”
The football great explained that he had hoped to manage the situation away from the public eye and expressed disappointment that the matter became public sooner than intended.
“Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand,” he added. “Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public, so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.”
Dalglish also took the opportunity to thank the medical professionals caring for him, praising their dedication, professionalism, and discretion throughout his treatment journey.
“As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves,” he said.
Following the announcement, Liverpool FC issued a heartfelt statement expressing unwavering support for one of the club’s most beloved figures.
“The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will continue to be, with Sir Kenny and his family,” the club stated. Liverpool also echoed Dalglish’s request for privacy as he continues his treatment.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest figures in British football history, Dalglish enjoyed legendary success with both Celtic and Liverpool, earning admiration not only for his achievements on the pitch but also for his leadership and contributions to the sport as a manager.
The news has prompted an outpouring of support from fans, former players, clubs, and football organizations around the world, many of whom have shared messages of encouragement for the Scottish legend.
Dalglish’s announcement comes just a day after another Liverpool great, Kevin Keegan, revealed that he is currently battling stage four cancer, making it an emotional period for many within the football community.
As Sir Kenny continues his treatment, supporters across the globe remain hopeful for his full recovery and are rallying behind one of football’s most respected and cherished figures.
