Bank of Scotland has introduced a special limited edition £20 note celebrating Scott McTominay and Scotland’s long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup stage.
The commemorative banknote was created to mark a historic achievement for the Scottish men’s national team, which secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup — the country’s first appearance at the tournament since 1998. At the centre of the design is an image inspired by McTominay’s unforgettable overhead kick during Scotland’s thrilling 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park.
That spectacular goal quickly became one of the defining moments of Scotland’s qualifying campaign. The strike not only electrified supporters inside the stadium but also symbolised the nation’s return to football’s biggest global competition after nearly three decades away.
According to reports from the unveiling ceremony, the new note blends classic Scottish currency design with a modern sporting tribute. The artwork captures the emotion and excitement surrounding the national team’s qualification, while placing McTominay’s iconic moment firmly into Scottish football history.
Speaking about the honour, McTominay admitted he was deeply proud to be recognised in such a unique way. The midfielder described representing Scotland at the World Cup as a dream shared by every player and highlighted how much the achievement means to supporters across the country. He also noted that seeing his goal featured on a Scottish banknote felt incredibly special because the moment belonged to the fans as much as the players.
The special edition currency is expected to become a major collector’s item. Only 100 notes have been printed, making the release exceptionally rare. Half of the total production will be made available to the public through auctions, prize draws, and interactive fan experiences in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Supporters attending the events will reportedly have the opportunity to participate in vault-cracking challenges for a chance to win one of the highly sought-after “McTominay Twenty” notes.
The launch has already generated excitement among football fans and collectors alike, with many seeing the note as more than just currency. For supporters of the Scotland national football team, it represents a celebration of belief, resilience, and one unforgettable moment that helped end a 28-year wait for World Cup football.
