Equatorial Guinea’s Baltasar Ebang Engonga Released After Two Years in Prison

Former Equatorial Guinea financial investigation official Baltasar Ebang Engonga has reportedly completed a two-year prison sentence and regained his freedom, bringing an end to a case that drew widespread international attention and controversy.

Engonga, who became widely known across social media as “Egonga,” was initially detained in late 2024 during a major government corruption investigation linked to allegations of embezzlement. The case quickly escalated beyond financial misconduct allegations after private explicit recordings attributed to him were leaked online, sparking global media coverage and public debate.

Although the Supreme Court of Equatorial Guinea later acquitted him in 2024 of charges connected to the viral video scandal, his legal troubles did not end there. He was subsequently prosecuted on separate financial misconduct charges and, in the summer of 2025, sentenced to a two-year prison term.

Following the completion of his sentence, Engonga has now been released, according to reports, marking the end of a turbulent period that significantly damaged his public image and career in government service.

The case, which combined allegations of corruption with a high-profile personal scandal, became one of the most widely discussed political controversies in Equatorial Guinea in recent years. It also fueled broader conversations online about accountability, privacy, and the intersection between public office and personal conduct.
