Macron Slams U.S. and Iran Over Strait of Hormuz Tensions

French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a strong warning over rising tensions in the Persian Gulf, criticizing both the United States and Iran for actions he says risk deepening instability in one of the world’s most critical maritime routes.

Speaking during a joint press conference in Gdańsk alongside Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Macron described the current situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz as a “mistake on both sides.”

His comments come amid renewed uncertainty after reports that the United States intends to maintain a targeted naval blockade affecting vessels linked to Iran, even after a brief diplomatic breakthrough last Friday had raised hopes of de-escalation. That temporary progress saw the vital shipping lane momentarily reopened, easing fears over global oil supply disruptions. However, the situation has since shifted, with Iran appearing to reverse its earlier stance on keeping the strait open.

Macron suggested that Washington’s decision to continue the blockade may have triggered Tehran’s response, further complicating an already fragile situation. According to him, both moves have only added to the risk of escalation in a region that plays a central role in global energy security.

Emphasizing the urgency of diplomacy, Macron urged all parties to return to the terms discussed during last week’s negotiations. He stressed that dialogue, rather than military pressure, remains the only viable path forward. In his view, restoring calm and stability requires renewed efforts to reach lasting agreements, particularly on sensitive issues such as nuclear development and ballistic missile programs.

The French leader also floated the idea of an international “defensive” mission aimed at ensuring the safe and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Such a move, he argued, would help safeguard the flow of global energy supplies while reducing the risk of further confrontation.

As tensions persist, Macron’s remarks highlight growing concern among global leaders about the potential economic and geopolitical fallout of continued instability in the Gulf. With the Strait of Hormuz serving as a key artery for the world’s oil shipments, any disruption carries far-reaching consequences, making the call for diplomacy more urgent than ever.
