Ademola Lookman Eyes Historic Copa del Rey Triumph with Atletico Madrid

All eyes are on Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman as he prepares for what could be a defining moment in his career, with Atletico Madrid set to face Real Sociedad in the 2026 Copa del Rey final at Estadio de la Cartuja.

The highly anticipated clash in Seville presents Lookman with the opportunity to secure his first major domestic trophy in Spain, marking a significant milestone in his fast-rising career. Since joining Atletico Madrid from Atalanta in February 2026, the Super Eagles star has quickly become an influential figure, particularly in cup competitions.

Atletico Madrid head into the final chasing a record-extending 11th Copa del Rey title, while Real Sociedad are aiming to lift the trophy for just the fourth time in their history. Both teams arrive with contrasting momentum, adding intrigue to what promises to be a tightly contested final.

Under manager Diego Simeone, Atletico have enjoyed a strong run in Europe, recently booking a place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after overcoming Barcelona on aggregate. However, their domestic form has been less convincing, with a string of recent defeats leaving them well behind in the La Liga title race.

Despite those struggles, the Copa del Rey offers Atletico a golden chance to end their season with silverware. Their last triumph in the competition dates back to the 2012/13 season, when they defeated Real Madrid in the final.

Lookman’s impact has been central to Atletico’s journey to this stage. He delivered a standout performance in the semi-final first leg against Barcelona, scoring and providing an assist in a dominant 4–0 victory. Although Atletico lost the return leg, his contributions ensured their progression to the final, underlining his importance to the team.

Now, the Nigerian forward stands on the brink of making history. A victory would see him become only the second Nigerian to win the Copa del Rey, following Emmanuel Amuneke, who achieved the feat with Barcelona in 1997.

While Real Sociedad do not currently have a Nigerian player in their squad, Sadiq Umar—who departed for Valencia earlier in the year—played a role in their journey to the final and remains eligible for a winner’s medal if the Basque side emerges victorious.

As the final kicks off in Seville, the stage is set for a thrilling encounter. For Lookman, it is more than just a match—it is a chance to cement his place in Spanish football history and crown an impressive rise with a major trophy.
