The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against drug trafficking, intercepting a large consignment of cannabis valued at over ₦724 million in Edo State.
Speaking at a press briefing in Benin City, the state commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, revealed that operatives seized a total of 7,245 kilograms of cannabis concealed in two articulated trucks. The drugs, packaged in 483 bags, were reportedly hidden inside vehicles used for transporting alcoholic beverages in an attempt to evade detection.
According to the agency, five suspects were arrested in connection with the operation. Preliminary investigations suggest that the illicit consignment originated from Sabongida-Ora in Owan West Local Government Area and was en route to Abuja before it was intercepted.
The commander described the operation as a significant achievement, noting that it marks the first time the Edo command has intercepted two fully loaded trucks of illegal drugs in a single operation. He emphasized that the scale of the seizure highlights the growing threat posed by organized drug trafficking networks.
A breakdown of the operation shows that one of the trucks carried 260 bags weighing 3,900 kilograms, while the second contained 223 bags weighing 3,345 kilograms. Both vehicles have since been moved to the agency’s headquarters for further investigation and are expected to be confiscated as part of the legal process.
Mitchell Ofoyeju noted that the successful interception likely prevented significant harm, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding regions, where the drugs were intended to be distributed.
The agency has assured the public that investigations are ongoing to uncover the wider network behind the operation. Authorities say efforts are being intensified to track down other individuals connected to the trafficking ring and ensure they face justice.
Reaffirming its commitment to combating drug-related crimes, the NDLEA urged citizens to support its efforts by providing timely and credible information. The agency also stressed that the operation aligns with its zero-tolerance approach under the leadership of Mohamed Buba Marwa, as it continues to work toward safer communities across Nigeria.
