The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has issued a firm warning to individuals involved in illegal land grabbing across Oyo, declaring that those who engage in such acts risk facing up to 15 years in prison.
The warning comes in response to a surge in violent incidents linked to land disputes in several communities within Oyo West Local Government Area. Residents in areas such as Itosi Yaya, Tella Omooba, Jowe, Idi-Iyalode, and others have reportedly been subjected to intimidation, coercion, and attacks by individuals attempting to unlawfully seize land.
In a statement released through his media director, Bode Durojaiye, the monarch expressed deep concern over the growing trend of lawlessness surrounding land ownership. He emphasized that land remains one of the most vital assets for economic growth, housing, and investment, making its protection a priority for the kingdom.
Oba Akeem Owoade noted that over time, some individuals driven by greed have resorted to illegal methods, including violence and threats, to dispossess rightful owners. He reminded offenders that the Oyo State Real Properties Protection Law of 2016 is fully in force and specifically targets such activities.
Under the law, those found guilty of land grabbing can face severe penalties, including up to 15 years imprisonment, while accomplices and enablers will also be held accountable. The monarch stressed that enforcement is being carried out by a dedicated task force set up by the state government.
In a bid to restore order, the Alaafin revealed that a Land Committee has been established to address long-standing issues related to land disputes in the region. The committee, made up of experienced professionals and respected community leaders, has been tasked with investigating cases of fraud, encroachment, and незаконные land transactions, ensuring that all dealings are conducted within the framework of the law.
He reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property across the Oyo kingdom, making it clear that unlawful activities will no longer be tolerated. Residents were also advised to be cautious and ignore individuals or groups falsely claiming ownership of land in the affected areas.
The move signals a renewed effort by traditional authorities to tackle land-related crimes and restore confidence in property ownership, as communities continue to grapple with the impact of illegal land seizures.
