Ukraine has strengthened its defence partnerships in the Gulf, signing a new agreement with Qatar focused on countering missile and drone threats, as regional tensions continue to escalate.
The deal was confirmed by Qatar’s defence ministry during a visit by Volodymyr Zelensky, who has been on a fast-paced diplomatic tour across the Gulf. The agreement outlines cooperation in key areas such as defence technology, joint investments, and the exchange of expertise in tackling unmanned aerial systems and missile attacks.
This development comes at a time when countries in the region are facing increasing aerial threats linked to ongoing tensions involving Iran. Ukraine, drawing from its experience in countering near-daily drone and missile attacks from Russia, is positioning itself as a valuable security partner.
Zelensky’s trip also saw similar progress with other Gulf nations. In United Arab Emirates, Ukraine agreed to deepen cooperation in defence and security following talks with President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. While specific details are still being finalised, both sides have expressed a shared commitment to strengthening protective measures against evolving threats.
In addition, Ukraine reached an air defence agreement with Saudi Arabia earlier in the week, further expanding its footprint in the region. Ukrainian anti-drone specialists have already been deployed across these countries, offering on-ground expertise to enhance defensive capabilities.
Ukraine has increasingly promoted its air defence systems as among the most effective globally, particularly in intercepting drones. As part of ongoing discussions, Kyiv has proposed a strategic exchange—offering its interception technology in return for access to more advanced and costly air defence missiles used by Gulf nations. This comes as Ukraine continues to seek additional resources to defend itself against persistent attacks.
