FG Approves Dualisation of Bodo–Bonny Road to Strengthen Connectivity in Niger Delta

The Federal Government of Nigeria has given the green light for the dualisation of the Bodo–Bonny Road, a major infrastructure project expected to significantly improve connectivity between Bonny Island and the mainland.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during a recent inspection tour of ongoing projects in the South-South region. According to him, the directive came from Bola Tinubu, who approved the expansion of the road from the Bodo axis to link directly with the vital East-West Road—one of the region’s busiest transport corridors.

Beyond easing transportation, the project is designed with added features aimed at enhancing both functionality and aesthetics. Plans include the installation of solar-powered street lighting and the planting of trees along the 37.9-kilometre stretch, creating a safer and more visually appealing route for commuters.

Umahi noted that the road will be constructed using durable concrete and is projected for completion within eight months, reflecting the government’s push for faster delivery of critical infrastructure.

During the tour, the minister also visited the Akpajo Bridge section of the East-West Road, where he expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work. However, he raised concerns about the use of completed sections by heavy-duty trucks, warning that such activities could damage the newly constructed infrastructure and reduce its lifespan. He called on the public to take responsibility in protecting national assets.

At the Aba–Port Harcourt Expressway, Umahi commended the efforts of GRB Construction for the ongoing rehabilitation and expansion works. The project, which stretches from the Aba axis to the Imo River boundary with Rivers State, has reportedly seen significant progress, with key repairs already completed.

The Federal Controller of Works in Rivers State, Tarilade Ewereama, confirmed that all aspects of the project are meeting required standards and timelines. She assured that the road would be ready before the end of the year, highlighting improvements such as upgraded drainage systems designed to withstand heavy traffic.

Also weighing in, Chioma Nweze, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement for the South-East, praised the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development. She described the project as a meaningful step toward fostering a sense of inclusion and urged residents across the South-East and South-South regions to support ongoing government initiatives.

With projects like the Bodo–Bonny Road dualisation underway, the government continues to signal its focus on boosting regional integration, improving transport networks, and driving economic growth through strategic infrastructure investments.
