EFCC Returns $225,895 and ₦62.79 Million to Foreign Fraud Victims

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has returned a total of $225,895 and ₦62.79 million to foreign victims who lost money to fraud schemes linked to Nigeria.

The agency disclosed the development in a statement shared on its official account on X on Friday, March 13, 2026. According to the commission, the recovered funds were handed over to victims from the United States and South Africa as part of ongoing efforts to track down and restitute proceeds from cross-border financial crimes.

The EFCC explained that the move reflects its continued commitment to international collaboration in the fight against fraud and cyber-enabled financial crimes. By returning recovered funds to victims abroad, the commission said it aims to compensate those affected while also reinforcing trust between Nigeria and its international partners.

The official handover ceremony was presided over by Mohammed Hammajoda. Representatives of the affected countries were also present, including Mike Fukuda and Lindi Mminele.

During the event, EFCC officials emphasized that the restitution forms part of broader initiatives to strengthen cooperation with international law enforcement agencies. The agency noted that collaborative efforts with foreign partners have become increasingly important as fraud and cybercrime networks operate across multiple countries and jurisdictions.

Authorities believe that returning recovered funds not only helps victims regain lost resources but also sends a strong message about Nigeria’s commitment to combating financial crimes and maintaining credibility in global financial transactions.

The development highlights the growing role of international partnerships in tackling fraud schemes that often span continents, while also underscoring the EFCC’s efforts to recover illicit assets and return them to their rightful owners.
