A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed shortly after takeoff from Balıkesir overnight, killing its pilot, Major İbrahim Bolat, according to officials from Turkey’s National Defence Ministry.
The aircraft had departed from the 9th Main Jet Base Command in Balıkesir at approximately 1:00 a.m. local time. Authorities reported that radio contact and radar tracking were lost moments after the jet became airborne. Search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched, later locating the wreckage near the busy Istanbul–İzmir motorway.
The pilot, Major Bolat, did not survive the crash. In a statement, the defence ministry confirmed his death and expressed condolences to his family, noting that a crash investigation team has been assigned to determine the cause of the accident.
Balıkesir Governor İsmail Ustaoğlu stated that the aircraft was conducting a mission flight at the time of the incident. He also extended his condolences on social media, describing Bolat as a “martyr” who lost his life in service.
Debris from the downed fighter jet was scattered across a wide area near the motorway, prompting authorities to temporarily close sections of the road as emergency crews secured the scene. Security personnel, firefighters, and medical teams responded quickly to manage the aftermath and ensure public safety.
A military ceremony honoring Major Bolat was held at the 9th Main Jet Base, where two F-16 aircraft performed a tribute flypast in his memory. His wife and daughter were present at the ceremony, which paid solemn tribute to his service and sacrifice.
Turkey’s judicial authorities have also launched an investigation into the crash. The Balıkesir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that senior prosecutors were dispatched to the scene to oversee the legal inquiry. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek stated that a team including the chief public prosecutor and two deputies began formal proceedings to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The incident adds to a series of recent aviation tragedies involving Turkish military aircraft. In November, Turkey suspended flights of its C-130 cargo fleet after one of the planes crashed in neighboring Georgia while returning from Azerbaijan, killing all 20 people on board.
As investigators work to determine what caused the F-16 to go down, tributes continue to pour in for Major Bolat, whose death marks a tragic loss for the Turkish Air Force and the nation.
