PM Modi to Visit Malaysia for High-Level Talks and Defence Cooperation Push

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to travel to Malaysia from February 7 to 8, where he will hold bilateral talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, marking an important moment in India–Malaysia relations.

The visit will be Modi’s third trip to the Southeast Asian nation and his first since both countries elevated their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The visit comes at a time when New Delhi is seeking to deepen cooperation with Kuala Lumpur across several strategic areas, particularly in defence.

The MEA has confirmed that India will explore opportunities for collaboration in defence manufacturing and services, including the potential sale of Dornier aircraft, as well as maintenance and support arrangements for Malaysia’s Scorpene submarines and SU-30 fighter jets. These discussions are expected to strengthen defence ties and reinforce India’s growing role as a reliable defence partner in the region.

Beyond defence and security, the visit is expected to focus on broader economic and strategic cooperation. As an important partner within ASEAN and the wider Indo-Pacific, Malaysia plays a key role in India’s Act East Policy, which aims to boost engagement with Southeast Asia through trade, connectivity, and people-to-people ties.

Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to interact with members of the Indian diaspora and business leaders during his stay. Malaysia is home to one of the largest Indian-origin communities in the world, with around 2.9 million people of Indian descent. It also has the second-largest population of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), estimated at about 2.75 million. The Indian community has long served as a cultural and economic bridge between the two countries.

The visit is expected to further consolidate the momentum generated since the upgrade of bilateral relations last year, with both sides looking to translate strategic intent into concrete outcomes. As India continues to expand its engagement across Southeast Asia, PM Modi’s Malaysia visit is likely to underscore New Delhi’s commitment to deepening partnerships that support regional stability, economic growth, and shared strategic interests.
