Tensions in the Middle East escalated after the U.S. Navy shot down an Iranian drone that approached the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea. Iran’s mission to the United Nations declined to comment on the shootdown, offering no immediate response to the U.S. account of events.

The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group represents the most prominent element of a broader U.S. military buildup in the Middle East. This deployment follows a violent crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran last month, widely described as the country’s deadliest internal unrest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
