AFCON 2025: Algeria Players Clash With Referees After 2–0 Quarter-Final Loss to Nigeria

Tempers flared at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on Saturday night as Algeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 campaign ended in dramatic fashion following a 2–0 defeat to Nigeria.

Goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sealed a convincing quarter-final victory for the Super Eagles, sending Nigeria through to the semi-finals and leaving the Desert Foxes frustrated and angry. While the result itself was decisive, it was the chaotic scenes after the final whistle that stole the spotlight.

According to reports from the stadium, several Algerian players and officials reacted angrily to the outcome, directing their frustration at the match officials led by Senegalese referee Issa Sy. The Algerian camp appeared convinced that officiating decisions played a major role in their exit from the tournament, despite Nigeria’s dominant display over the 90 minutes.

What began as heated protests quickly escalated into an ugly confrontation on the pitch. Algerian players surrounded the refereeing team, engaging in aggressive exchanges that soon spiraled into a large on-field brawl. A number of Nigerian players were also caught up in the chaos as officials struggled to regain control.

Security personnel and match officials were forced to intervene, escorting the referees off the field to prevent further escalation. Even then, the situation did not immediately calm down. The tension spilled into the technical area, where some Algerian players were seen pushing and throwing punches as they attempted to reach what appeared to be the match officials.

The disturbing scenes cast a shadow over what was otherwise a strong performance by Nigeria, who executed their game plan with discipline and clinical finishing. Osimhen once again proved his importance on the big stage, while Akor Adams’ goal confirmed the Super Eagles’ superiority on the night.

Algeria’s exit from AFCON 2025 will now be remembered not only for the defeat itself but also for the post-match unrest, which could attract disciplinary action from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). With emotions running high and tournament stakes at their peak, the incident has reignited discussions around player conduct, refereeing standards, and post-match security at major African football events.

As Nigeria prepare for their semi-final clash, attention will also turn to CAF’s response to the confrontation, with fans and analysts awaiting possible sanctions following one of the most dramatic endings of the tournament so far.
