Trump: Without US Leadership, NATO Would Be Powerless

US President Donald Trump has delivered a sweeping defense of his foreign and security policy, claiming his leadership transformed NATO, strengthened American military power, and helped prevent wider global conflict.

Speaking about NATO’s defense spending, Trump said that before his presidency, many alliance members were failing to meet their financial commitments, with defense contributions stuck at around 2 percent of GDP. He argued that the United States was unfairly carrying the burden of Europe’s security, a situation he described as unsustainable.

Trump claimed that through persistent pressure and personal diplomacy, he pushed NATO countries to significantly increase their defense spending, saying contributions rose as high as 5 percent of GDP and that payments were made promptly. According to him, critics initially dismissed this as impossible, but it succeeded because of his relationships with other world leaders.

The president also asserted that his involvement was decisive in preventing Russia from fully overrunning Ukraine, arguing that without US leadership under his watch, Moscow would have taken complete control of the country. He framed this as part of a broader strategy of deterrence built on rebuilding and modernizing the US military.

Trump went further to claim he personally helped end eight wars during his time in office, saying those efforts saved millions of lives. He also revisited his long-standing grievance over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, noting that Norway, a NATO member, chose not to award him the honor. He added that recognition was less important than the lives he believes were spared.

Questioning the strength of NATO without American leadership, Trump said Russia and China have little fear of the alliance in the absence of the United States. He also expressed doubt that NATO countries would come to America’s aid if the situation were reversed, despite the US commitment to stand by the alliance.

Trump concluded by stressing that his administration rebuilt the US military during his first term and continues to prioritize defense, arguing that American strength is the primary reason adversaries like Russia and China show restraint. He described the United States as the only nation those powers truly fear and respect, portraying this as central to his “America First” vision.

The remarks have reignited debate over NATO burden-sharing, US global leadership, and Trump’s legacy on national security and international diplomacy.
