El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, has shared a striking Christmas video capturing the dramatic transformation of his country, particularly the once-neglected Historic Center of San Salvador. The footage, which quickly gained attention online, highlights a cleaner, safer, and revitalized cityscape—an image far removed from the violence and decay that once defined the area.
In his message accompanying the video, Bukele reflected on El Salvador’s past struggles, describing the Historic Center as the most battered part of an already underdeveloped nation. For decades, the area bore the scars of earthquakes, a brutal civil war, prolonged neglect, and over 30 years of gang dominance. As crime and disorder spread, the true heart of the city gradually shifted elsewhere, leaving the original center abandoned and forgotten.
According to the president, restoring the Historic Center was neither easy nor cheap. Rebuilding an old, damaged part of a city, he noted, is far more complex than developing new districts from scratch. Yet, he argued that choosing restoration over abandonment was deliberate—and symbolic.
Bukele described the recovery of the Historic Center as a powerful statement of national rebirth, proof that El Salvador could reclaim spaces long written off as lost. The Christmas video showcases modern infrastructure, improved public spaces, and a renewed sense of life in an area once synonymous with fear and decay.
For many supporters, the visuals serve as a testament to Bukele’s aggressive security policies and urban renewal efforts, which have dramatically reduced gang activity and reshaped public perception of the country. As festive lights illuminate San Salvador, the president’s message is clear: El Salvador, once defined by violence and abandonment, is entering a new chapter marked by order, renewal, and hope.
