The United States military has carried out large-scale airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) positions across Syria, marking a forceful response to a recent attack that killed U.S. personnel, American officials confirmed on Friday.
According to U.S. defense authorities, the operation targeted dozens of ISIS locations spanning central Syria. The strikes were part of an intensified campaign by the U.S.-led coalition, which has conducted repeated air and ground operations in recent months aimed at weakening the extremist group’s remaining networks, often in coordination with Syrian security forces.
The decision to strike followed last weekend’s deadly assault on coalition forces in Syria, an attack U.S. officials believe was carried out by ISIS militants. President Donald Trump had earlier vowed swift and decisive retaliation, a promise that was carried out under what the Pentagon described as “Operation Hawkeye Strike.”
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the operation focused on ISIS fighters, weapons depots, and key infrastructure used by the group. He emphasized that the mission was not the start of a broader war but a targeted act of retribution. In a blunt statement, Hegseth said U.S. forces hunted down ISIS operatives responsible for the attack and warned that further action would follow if threats persist.
President Trump also addressed the strikes publicly, stating on social media that the Syrian government had fully supported the operation. He described the action as “very serious retaliation” and later reinforced the message during a campaign-style rally in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. There, he characterized the strikes as a massive blow to ISIS, declaring the mission highly successful.
U.S. Central Command revealed that more than 70 ISIS-linked targets were struck during the operation, with support from Jordanian fighter jets. The strikes were spread across central Syria and aimed at degrading the group’s ability to plan and execute further attacks against U.S. and coalition forces.
Despite suffering major territorial losses in recent years, ISIS continues to operate through sleeper cells and scattered fighters across parts of Syria. U.S. officials say these latest strikes are intended to send a clear warning that attacks on American forces will be met with overwhelming force.
As tensions remain high in the region, U.S. military leaders insist the mission was precise, deliberate, and focused solely on eliminating terrorist threats, reinforcing Washington’s commitment to protecting its personnel and allies from extremist violence.
