A shocking incident in Taraba State has sparked widespread outrage after a Nigerian police inspector was arrested for allegedly killing his 11-year-old nephew and secretly burying him.
The incident reportedly unfolded in Jalingo, the state capital, where residents of the Nyabunkaka area mobbed a police officer accused of murdering a child.
According to an internal police wireless message obtained by SaharaReporters, officers attached to the GRA Division received an emergency call on December 5, 2025, alerting them that an officer was being beaten by an angry crowd.
When the officers arrived at the scene, they found Inspector Philemon Ayuba (AP/No. 335430) being physically assaulted by residents. The mob accused him of killing a young boy identified as Hosanna Yunana, an 11-year-old who was said to have been living with the officer.
Police operatives intervened, rescued the inspector from the crowd, and placed him in protective custody.
The internal police report revealed that during interrogation, the officer allegedly confessed to confronting the boy on December 3 over the alleged theft of ₦60,000. The child reportedly fled toward a nearby riverside, with the inspector chasing after him. During the pursuit, the officer allegedly beat the boy, who later collapsed and died from the injuries.
Rather than report the incident, the inspector is said to have buried the child’s body in a shallow grave and kept the matter hidden. He later led detectives to the burial site, where the body was reportedly recovered.
The disturbing case has intensified public anger and renewed calls for accountability, justice, and stronger oversight within Nigeria’s policing system, as investigations continue into the tragic death of the child.
