An Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot lost his life on Friday after a HAL Tejas fighter jet crashed during a demonstration flight at the Dubai Air Show. The tragic incident occurred around 2:10 p.m. local time at Al Maktoum International Airport, marking a somber end to the prestigious weeklong aviation event.

According to the IAF, the indigenous Indian combat jet had completed several aerial maneuvers before it suddenly appeared to lose control, plunging toward the ground and crashing within the airfield premises. Thick black smoke quickly rose above the crash site, drawing shocked reactions from spectators and participants.

In an official statement, the Indian Air Force confirmed the pilot’s death, noting, “The pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief.” The force also announced that a court of inquiry will investigate the exact cause of the crash.

Emergency responders in Dubai acted swiftly, with firefighting crews and medical teams immediately deployed to the scene. The Dubai Media Office stated that emergency services were “managing the situation on-site,” as police cordoned off the area and firefighting foam covered surrounding sections of the airfield. An SUV carrying diplomatic plates and the Indian flag was also seen near the crash zone.

The Tejas, developed by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), represents India’s push for a modern indigenous fighter platform. As a lightweight, single-engine jet, it plays a key role in India’s strategy to strengthen its air defense capabilities amid rising tensions in South Asia and China’s expanding military footprint.

The crash occurred on the closing day of the Dubai Air Show, an event known for attracting global attention and major aircraft orders, including recent deals from Emirates and FlyDubai.

The aviation community, along with both Indian and UAE authorities, continues to monitor developments as investigations begin. The loss of the pilot casts a shadow over the otherwise successful international showcase of aviation technology and military capability.
