U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled strong support for a new round of congressional sanctions targeting Russia, warning that any nation maintaining economic ties with Moscow will face severe consequences.
Speaking to reporters at Palm Beach Airport on Sunday evening, Trump confirmed that Republican lawmakers are already drafting the legal framework for additional sanctions.
“That’s ok with me,” he said when asked about the proposed measures. Trump stressed that the U.S. is prepared to take decisive action against countries aiding Russia economically. “Any country that does business with Russia will be very severely sanctioned,” he declared.
The president also suggested that Iran could be included in the expanded sanctions package, indicating a tougher stance on nations aligned with U.S. adversaries. “We may add Iran to the formula,” Trump added.
The proposed sanctions aim to tighten pressure on Russia’s energy sector, which remains a major source of revenue for the Kremlin. By restricting global cooperation and investment in Russian industries, Washington hopes to limit Moscow’s ability to fund and sustain its military operations.
