Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae has warned that any Chinese military action against Taiwan could be deemed a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan — a scenario that may authorize Tokyo to mobilize its armed forces under existing security laws.
During a parliamentary session on Friday, Prime Minister Takaichi made the statement while responding to a question regarding whether a Chinese naval blockade or military engagement with Taiwan would qualify as a direct threat to Japan’s national security.
According to Japan’s Asahi Shimbun, Takaichi said, “If warships are used and other armed actions are involved, I believe this could constitute a survival-threatening situation.”
Under Japan’s security legislation, such a designation allows the country to exercise “collective self-defense” — meaning Japan could take military action to defend an ally, such as the United States, or another nation closely tied to its security interests, even if Japan itself is not directly attacked.
