Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on the Nigerian government to reconsider its diplomatic relationship with the United States following President Donald Trump’s recent warning of possible military intervention over what he described as the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
Gumi, reacting to Trump’s statement that the U.S. “stands ready, willing, and able to save Christians around the world,” condemned the comments as “provocative, threatening, and an attack on Nigeria’s sovereignty.” He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to take a firm stance and protect the nation’s independence against what he described as foreign intimidation.
According to Gumi, “President Trump should withdraw his threat immediately, or Nigeria should consider cutting off its relationship with the United States. No country has the right to dictate to another under the guise of religion or human rights.”
The cleric further cautioned that Trump’s remarks could heighten religious tension within Nigeria, a nation already grappling with insecurity and political instability. He described the former U.S. president’s position as “a deliberate attempt to sow division and interfere in Nigeria’s internal affairs.”
Trump’s earlier comments about Nigeria facing an “existential threat to Christianity” have sparked widespread reactions both domestically and internationally. While Christian groups in the U.S. and Nigeria have welcomed his statement, several Muslim leaders and political analysts have warned that such rhetoric could strain diplomatic relations between both countries.
