Massive protests have erupted across Mexico following the shocking assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, who was gunned down during a public Day of the Dead celebration in Michoacán.

The killing, reportedly carried out by suspected cartel members in downtown Uruapan during peak hours, has sparked nationwide outrage over the country’s growing wave of political violence and impunity.

In the aftermath of the assassination, hundreds of angry protesters — mostly Gen Z demonstrators — stormed the Michoacán Government Palace in Morelia, the state capital. They vandalized government property, broke furniture, and painted slogans on the palace walls, demanding justice and an end to cartel dominance in the region.

Across Morelia and other municipalities, thousands of citizens took to the streets in solidarity, chanting slogans against the ruling Morena party and accusing the state government of “surrendering Michoacán to organized crime.”

During the slain mayor’s funeral procession, hundreds of mourners dressed in black marched through the streets of Uruapan, carrying banners and chanting, “Justice! Justice! Out with Morena!”

Carlos Manzo’s assassination marks the seventh killing of a sitting mayor in Michoacán since Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla assumed office in 2021. The alarming trend has intensified public fear and frustration over the deepening ties between politics and organized crime in Mexico.

As the protests continue, calls for justice and accountability are growing louder, with citizens demanding that both state and federal authorities take decisive action to protect public officials and restore security across Michoacán.
