Without Money, You’re Nothing in Nigeria- Man Claims

A Nigerian man has sparked conversations online after expressing his opinion that Nigeria is just as materialistic as the United States—if not more. According to him, wealth and material possessions have become the ultimate measure of worth in Nigerian society.

“In Nigeria, if you don’t have money, you’re nothing. Nigeria is as materialistic, if not more materialistic, than America,” he said.

His statement has ignited a wave of reactions across social media, with many Nigerians admitting that societal values have increasingly placed material success above integrity, kindness, and personal fulfillment. From social circles to relationships and even professional opportunities, money often dictates how people are treated.

Observers note that this growing materialism is reflected in everyday life—from social media culture flaunting luxury lifestyles, to the pressure to “look successful” regardless of one’s actual financial situation.

While some argue that the harsh economic reality in Nigeria has made people more money-conscious, others believe the obsession with wealth has eroded moral values and genuine human connection.
