Tension gripped the Serbian capital, Belgrade, on Wednesday after gunshots and fires broke out outside the country’s parliament building. According to local reports, the shooting left at least one person injured and has sparked heightened security concerns across the city.

President Aleksandar Vučić swiftly condemned the incident, describing it as a “terrorist event.” Security forces were immediately deployed to the scene to restore order and secure the area surrounding the National Assembly.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, followed by the outbreak of fires near the parliament complex. The sudden chaos caused panic among residents and passersby, many of whom fled the area for safety as emergency services rushed to the scene.

The incident occurred just days before a planned November 1 rally marking the first anniversary of the train station canopy collapse—an event that previously ignited widespread youth-led protests against President Vučić’s government.

Vučić, who has been in power since 2017, is facing growing political tension as citizens prepare to commemorate the tragedy that became a rallying point for demands for greater accountability and government reform.

Authorities have yet to confirm the motive behind the attack or identify the assailants, but an investigation is underway. Security in Belgrade has been tightened, with police urging residents to remain calm and avoid the area as forensic teams continue their work.
