Tension is brewing in Lagos following controversial remarks by the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as Sego. His statements have sparked widespread outrage after he openly declared that anyone who votes against the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections will face dire consequences.
Reports indicate that Sego, addressing a gathering of supporters, warned millions of Lagos residents not to oppose the ruling party. He vowed to “deal with” those who fail to align with APC during the elections, a threat that many observers have described as undemocratic and dangerous.
The comments have raised serious concerns about voter intimidation and political violence, especially as Lagos remains Nigeria’s commercial hub with over 20 million inhabitants. Civil rights groups and political analysts have condemned the statement, stressing that such rhetoric undermines democratic values and the right of citizens to freely choose their leaders.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually intensify, calls are mounting for authorities to take action and ensure that threats of political violence do not discourage voter participation. Many Lagosians have expressed fear over the possibility of intimidation at the polls if such warnings go unchecked.
