A dramatic incident occurred on Friday afternoon in Abuja when a Toyota Corolla went up in flames near the popular Banex Plaza in Wuse 2.
Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle, which had reportedly been modified to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), suddenly caught fire while in motion. Panic spread quickly around the busy commercial area as bystanders watched the blaze consume the car.
The Federal Fire Service was alerted and arrived at the scene after about 30 minutes. However, by the time the flames were contained, most parts of the car had already been destroyed. Only the engine was partially salvaged from the inferno.
The incident has once again raised concerns about vehicle modifications and the safety risks associated with CNG conversions in Nigeria, especially in urban centers. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause of the fire, but safety experts continue to warn motorists to exercise caution with alternative fuel systems.
