Tensions flared on Thursday as Israeli naval forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, the largest yet attempt to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Dozens of activists, including members of the European Parliament, were detained during the operation.

Footage circulating online showed French MEP Rima Hassan and several companions throwing their phones into the sea just moments before their vessel was boarded by Israeli troops. The activists said they wanted to prevent sensitive information from being seized by authorities.

The flotilla, made up of multiple vessels, had set sail in hopes that the large number of boats would overwhelm Israeli defenses and allow some to reach Gaza. However, Israeli forces boarded most of the ships, declaring the interception mission over by Thursday afternoon.

The action has drawn sharp condemnation from international observers and human rights advocates, who accuse Israel of violating humanitarian principles by blocking aid and activist missions to Gaza. The interception comes amid mounting global criticism of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, which has devastated large areas and left tens of thousands dead.
