Russian emergency services have brought under control a fire that broke out at one of the country’s largest oil refineries in the Yaroslavl region, northeast of Moscow.
The blaze, which erupted early Wednesday, was confirmed by regional governor Mikhail Yevrayev, who reassured residents that the incident was not linked to a Ukrainian drone strike.
“Residents were concerned it might have been the result of an enemy drone attack. But what happened has nothing to do with that… The fire is of a technological nature,” Yevrayev stated on Telegram, without providing further details.
The Yaroslavl refinery is among the five biggest in Russia, making the fire a cause for concern amid ongoing tensions and Ukraine’s systematic targeting of Russian energy infrastructure. Despite speculation, local authorities insist the incident was purely technical.
Firefighters worked quickly to contain the flames, and officials have not reported any casualties. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
