Tensions continue to rise in Madagascar as footage emerged allegedly showing police opening fire on civilians during ongoing anti-government protests. Security forces also fired tear gas on Tuesday as hundreds of young demonstrators returned to the streets of Antananarivo, the capital, despite President Andry Rajoelina’s recent move to dissolve his government.
The protests, largely driven by the country’s Gen-Z population, erupted last week, with thousands of people marching across major cities to denounce worsening living conditions, including persistent water and power outages.
In an attempt to calm the unrest, President Rajoelina dismissed his cabinet on Monday. However, demonstrators remained unsatisfied, responding to fresh calls on social media for another mass rally. A statement posted on the protest movement’s official Facebook page rejected the president’s speech, demanding an apology and full accountability after reports that protesters were killed by security forces.
The protests underscore growing frustration in Madagascar, where citizens accuse the government of failing to address basic infrastructure challenges while security forces face criticism for their heavy-handed response.
