Tensions rose in Portland, Oregon, on Sunday as several hundred demonstrators gathered outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building to protest the deployment of National Guard troops ordered by the Trump administration.
The protest drew a diverse crowd, including families with children, grandparents, and seasoned activists dressed in the trademark “black bloc” attire of ski masks and sunglasses. Demonstrations stretched from the afternoon into the evening, filling the streets with chants and the beat of bucket drums.
Federal agents armed with long-barrel rifles were spotted patrolling rooftops near the ICE facility, while about two dozen officers moved through the crowd intermittently to clear paths for vehicles. Portland police officers were also present at the scene, largely directing traffic as the protest disrupted bus services in the area.
Despite its intensity, the demonstration remained largely peaceful, with participants voicing their disapproval of the increased federal presence in the city. For months, Portland has been a flashpoint for activism, and Sunday’s gathering marked another chapter in the city’s ongoing resistance to federal enforcement tactics.
