U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a fresh wave of tariffs on key imported goods, reigniting trade tensions after a period of relative stability. The new measures, unveiled Thursday on Truth Social, will impose 100% duties on patented pharmaceuticals and a 25% levy on heavy-duty trucks starting next week.

Trump framed the tariffs as essential to protecting American manufacturing and safeguarding national security. The move adds to a growing list of trade measures under his administration, which has already placed duties of up to 50% on a range of goods, including steel, autos, and other high-value imports.

The latest announcement delivers a sharp blow to businesses and consumers alike. In addition to the tariffs on drugs and trucks, the White House confirmed a 50% duty on imported kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, along with a 30% levy on upholstered furniture.

These measures are expected to significantly raise costs in the home goods and furniture markets, further squeezing households already coping with inflation and supply chain disruptions.

Trump’s decision shattered what had been a brief pause in his aggressive trade policy. The new tariffs add uncertainty for companies navigating global supply chain challenges, rising operational expenses, and cautious consumer spending.

As the new duties take effect on Wednesday, businesses, healthcare providers, and trade partners are bracing for the ripple effects of another escalation in U.S. trade policy. The measures mark one of the most sweeping tariff expansions under Trump’s presidency, underscoring his determination to reshape the global trade landscape in favor of domestic industries.
