Super Typhoon Ragasa, the strongest tropical cyclone recorded globally this year, unleashed its fury on Wednesday, bringing widespread destruction across parts of Hong Kong and Taiwan.

In Hong Kong, hurricane-force winds and relentless rainfall pounded the city, sending towering waves crashing onto the eastern and southern shoreline. Roads near residential neighborhoods were submerged, while emergency crews worked around the clock to contain flooding and respond to storm-related damage in the Asian financial hub.

Taiwan has been enduring Ragasa’s impact since Monday, as the typhoon’s outer rim swept across the island. Torrential rains triggered deadly floods and landslides, claiming at least 14 lives. The Taiwan fire department confirmed that in Hualien County, a barrier lake overflowed under the force of continuous downpours, releasing a devastating wall of water that surged into a nearby town.

Authorities across the region remain on high alert, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid coastal areas as recovery efforts continue. Ragasa’s powerful winds and intense rainfall have not only tested infrastructure but also highlighted the vulnerability of coastal communities to increasingly severe tropical storms.

With climate experts warning of stronger and more frequent cyclones in the future, the destruction left behind by Ragasa stands as a stark reminder of the urgent need for resilience and preparedness in the face of extreme weather events.
