A powerful storm linked to Typhoon Peipah swept through Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan on Friday, leaving widespread destruction in its path. The storm triggered violent winds—possibly tornado-like—that ripped through several municipalities, destroying homes, injuring residents, and overturning vehicles.
Local authorities confirmed that more than 40 houses were damaged across Makinohara, Kakegawa, Yaizu, and Yoshida Town, while at least 24 people sustained injuries. Three of the victims are reported to be in serious condition, while over 20 others suffered lighter wounds. The city of Makinohara recorded the most casualties, where tiles were blown off rooftops, utility poles collapsed, and multiple structures sustained heavy damage.
In Yaizu City, police reported that an agricultural greenhouse was torn apart by fierce winds, leaving a farmer in his 40s with a severe facial fracture. A large trailer was also overturned, highlighting the intensity of the storm’s impact on infrastructure and transportation.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said Shizuoka was covered by heavily developed rain clouds as Typhoon Peipah moved across the region, bringing with it violent gusts and downpours. Officials from the prefectural government and local police are continuing to assess the full scale of the damage and provide assistance to affected communities.
The storm’s destructive force has left many families displaced and raised fresh concerns over the region’s vulnerability to increasingly extreme weather events. Recovery efforts are now underway as emergency teams work to restore safety and stability in the hardest-hit areas.
