Anni town in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district was gripped by fear on Tuesday morning after a massive landslide struck a building near the newly built bus stand. The incident, which followed days of relentless rainfall, sent shockwaves through the bustling tourist hub.
Eyewitness videos, now circulating widely on social media, show the dramatic moment when a three-story commercial building crumbled down the mountainside. Trees and debris tumbled along with it, triggering chaos as panicked tourists at the bus terminus ran for safety, some crying out “Hey Bhagwan” in desperation.
Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. Authorities had already evacuated the vulnerable structures three days earlier after alarming cracks began appearing due to the region’s heavy rains between August 25 and September 2. The precautionary move is now being credited with preventing a major tragedy.
Landslides are not uncommon in Himachal Pradesh during the monsoon season, but the collapse at Anni highlights the growing risks of construction on fragile hillsides. Local officials have assured that further safety measures will be taken, while geologists are expected to survey the area to assess the extent of damage and stability of nearby buildings.
The incident serves as yet another reminder of the fragile balance between rapid urban development and the forces of nature in the Himalayan region.
