A massive fire has erupted at a chemical plant warehouse in Balashikha, Moscow Oblast, sending thick black smoke billowing across the city and triggering a wave of panic among residents. The blaze, which broke out early Saturday morning, quickly spread across 4,000 square meters and engulfed nearby buildings, making it one of the most severe industrial fires reported in the region this year.
Locals described hearing loud explosions followed by a strong burning smell that spread throughout the area. Videos circulating on social media show towering flames and dense smoke rising above Balashikha as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
According to reports from Russian media and Telegram channels, more than 80 emergency workers are battling the inferno, supported by specialized firefighting equipment and a helicopter deployed to douse the flames from above. Despite ongoing efforts, officials say the fire has not yet been brought under control, with heavy smoke and the dense occupancy of the premises hampering operations.
Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the blaze or report any casualties, but residents are being urged to stay indoors and avoid the affected area due to the toxic smoke.
The fire has reignited concerns about safety protocols in Russia’s industrial sector, particularly at facilities storing flammable chemicals, where past incidents have raised alarm over regulatory enforcement and emergency preparedness.
