Anti-immigration protests broke out across major Japanese cities, including Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, as debates over the nation’s immigration policies intensify. A viral video from Osaka captured demonstrators marching through the streets, chanting slogans against recent government proposals.
The protests follow rising nationalist sentiment, fueled in part by the far-right Sanseito party, which has gained momentum after strong performances in the latest upper house elections. The party has been advocating for stricter immigration controls, including measures to make deportations of asylum seekers easier, while also calling for the exclusion of non-Japanese residents from certain welfare programs.
In addition to immigration, Sanseito has campaigned on rolling back diversity and gender equality initiatives, tapping into the frustrations of voters concerned about economic stagnation and searching for populist solutions.
The protests underscore Japan’s deepening divide over immigration and cultural identity, an issue likely to remain central in the country’s political debates in the months ahead.
