The prime minister of Yemen’s Houthi government and several ministers were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the capital, Sanaa, marking the first such attack to eliminate senior officials of the group.
Mahdi al-Mashat, head of the Houthi Supreme Political Council, confirmed on Saturday that the strike, which took place on Thursday, left multiple senior figures dead and others wounded. However, he did not specify whether the Houthi defence minister was among the casualties.
Israel stated on Friday that its forces had targeted the Iran-aligned group’s chief of staff, defence minister, and other top officials, noting that it was still verifying the full outcome of the operation.
Prime Minister Ahmad Ghaleb al-Rahwi, who assumed the role about a year ago, was among those killed. Though he held the official title, the de facto leader of the government had been his deputy, Mohamed Moftah, who has now been appointed to carry out the prime minister’s duties.
The strike represents a significant escalation, intensifying tensions in the region as Israel expands its campaign against Iranian-backed groups.
