Germany’s DHL Halts Standard Package Deliveries to US Amid Trump Tariff Measures

Germany’s postal service, Deutsche Post DHL, has announced temporary restrictions on parcel deliveries to the United States following new tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump’s administration.

Beginning Saturday, DHL will suspend its standard package delivery service to the US — a popular and cost-effective option for many small businesses. The company explained in a statement that the move stems from new postal delivery processes implemented by US authorities, creating uncertainty about tariff responsibilities and compliance.

“The reason for the restrictions, which we expect to be temporary, is new processes for postal delivery which have been put in place by the US authorities,” DHL said. “Important questions have not yet been answered, including who will have to pay the tariffs and how.”

The suspension mirrors similar actions by other European postal services, including those in Austria, Belgium, and Denmark, who are also adjusting operations in response to the new US import rules.

While standard shipping will no longer be available, DHL confirmed that its premium “express” delivery service — covering parcels up to 70 kilograms — will continue to operate. Additionally, private individuals will still be allowed to send packages classified as gifts, provided their value does not exceed $100 (approximately €86). However, these shipments will face stricter checks to ensure they are not being used for commercial purposes.

The move follows the Trump administration’s July announcement that, effective August 29, the US would abolish a long-standing tax exemption on small packages entering the country. The change is part of Washington’s broader effort to tighten trade regulations and enforce tariff policies.

For now, German businesses reliant on affordable parcel shipments to the US may face increased costs and logistical hurdles, as cross-border trade adapts to the new restrictions.
