Slovakia’s Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has stated that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is not possible and that Russia cannot be defeated militarily. His remarks came during a video address following an online summit of European Union leaders, which focused on upcoming talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.

Fico stressed that the first condition for ending the conflict in Ukraine is acknowledging that the country cannot become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance. He argued that a resolution cannot be achieved without addressing the issue of territorial changes, suggesting that any peace deal must take such realities into account.

The Slovak leader described President Trump’s diplomatic initiative to resolve the conflict as a “huge personal achievement,” while at the same time expressing disappointment that the European Union has been left waiting for the United States to take the lead in negotiations.

Fico emphasized that the war in Ukraine cannot be settled through military means, insisting that Russia, as a nuclear power, cannot be defeated on the battlefield. His comments reflect a growing debate within Europe over the future of the conflict, NATO’s role, and the West’s strategy toward Moscow.
