The city of Kremenchuk and wider Poltava region came under one of the heaviest Russian attacks in recent weeks early Tuesday morning, August 19, leaving behind widespread destruction and fires. According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched a combined strike of 30 suicide drones, 10 cruise missiles, and 3 ballistic missiles, pounding civilian and energy infrastructure.

Residents reported the first wave of explosions in the Lubny and Kremenchuk districts after swarms of drones targeted the region overnight. The Ukrainian Air Force later confirmed that Russia had deployed Tu-95MS strategic bombers to launch missiles from long-range, keeping their aircraft outside Ukraine’s air defenses.

By 5:08 a.m., cruise missiles were detected over Kharkiv heading toward Poltava. Minutes later, at 5:26 a.m., multiple blasts shook Kremenchuk as dozens of explosions lit up the city. Thick black smoke covered the skies while fires ripped through energy facilities and transportation infrastructure.

Kremenchuk Mayor Vitaly Maletsky confirmed significant damage but praised Ukrainian air defense units for intercepting part of the assault. He also commended the State Emergency Service (DSNS) for swiftly extinguishing several fires triggered by the bombardment.

The Poltava Regional Military Administration (OVA) reported both direct hits and falling debris in the affected districts. Regional governor Volodymyr Kohut said administrative buildings of local energy companies had been struck, cutting off electricity to thousands of people.

“In the Lubny district, 1,471 households and 119 businesses lost power due to the attack. Emergency teams are working around the clock to restore supply. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported,” Kohut stated.

The large-scale assault once again highlights Russia’s focus on crippling Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of winter, while also intensifying pressure on communities far from the front lines. For residents of Poltava, the night was a grim reminder of the continuing reach of Russia’s long-range weapons.
