TAITUNG, Taiwan — Typhoon Yagi, also known internationally as Podul, has made landfall in southeastern Taiwan, unleashing destructive winds of up to 191 kilometers per hour and forcing widespread emergency measures.
Authorities have evacuated more than 5,500 residents from vulnerable coastal and mountainous areas as the powerful storm batters the island. The Central Weather Bureau reports that torrential rain and fierce gusts are expected to continue, raising the risk of landslides and flash floods in several regions.
The typhoon’s impact has prompted the closure of schools, businesses, and government offices across nine cities and counties. Transportation has been severely disrupted, with 252 domestic flights and 129 international flights canceled, leaving thousands of travelers stranded. Ferry services have also been suspended in anticipation of dangerous sea conditions.

Meteorologists warn that Yagi could continue to cause significant damage as it moves inland, particularly to Taiwan’s agricultural and coastal infrastructure. Emergency crews are on high alert, and residents are urged to stay indoors until the storm passes.
The government has called on communities to remain vigilant, emphasizing that even after the strongest winds subside, heavy rains could lead to dangerous flooding and debris flows. As the storm pushes further into Taiwan, officials are working to ensure that shelters remain stocked and accessible to those in need.
