U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Wednesday.

The three-hour meeting comes just days ahead of a White House-imposed deadline for Russia to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine or risk facing intensified economic sanctions—penalties that could also impact countries continuing to purchase Russian oil.

According to the Kremlin, the talks were “useful and constructive,” with Putin’s foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov noting that the conversation focused heavily on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Ushakov also highlighted a shared interest in exploring “prospects for possible development of strategic cooperation between the U.S. and Russia,” signaling a potential thaw in relations amid rising global tensions.

The meeting is being closely watched internationally, as it marks a significant moment in the Trump administration’s approach to resolving the Ukraine conflict, which has now dragged on for years with devastating humanitarian and economic consequences.

Shortly after the talks, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to praise the outcome, writing that Witkoff “had a highly productive meeting” with the Russian president and that “great progress was made.” He added that America’s European allies have been briefed on the discussion and that coordinated efforts to end the war could move forward “in the days and weeks to come.”
