In an unexpected moment at the White House on Tuesday morning, U.S. President Donald Trump was spotted surveying the rooftop above the press briefing room and west colonnade, drawing the attention of reporters and onlookers gathered below.
Emerging from a door adjacent to the State Dining Room, Trump appeared on the roof shortly before noon, accompanied by a small group that included James McCrery, the architect overseeing the newly announced $200 million White House ballroom project.
The group spent close to 20 minutes walking the rooftop and observing the White House grounds, including the recently renovated Rose Garden below.

The rooftop appearance didn’t go unnoticed. Alerted by the unusual positioning of snipers above the Oval Office—a detail that signaled heightened activity—reporters quickly gathered and began shouting questions from below. One called out, “Sir, why are you on the roof? With a wave and a smile, Trump responded: “Taking a little walk. It’s good for your health.”

Trump moved slowly along the rooftop, frequently pointing out architectural features and gesturing as he spoke with McCrery and others. Several times, he approached the edge closest to the press corps, waving and cupping his hands to amplify shouted responses.
The visit appeared to be a part of ongoing planning related to the upcoming ballroom expansion, a project that has stirred discussion both for its scale and for its symbolic statement about the current administration’s priorities.
