Iran’s stance toward Israel appeared increasingly contradictory this week after conflicting statements emerged from top officials within the Islamic Republic.
While Iran’s Foreign Minister stated that “it has never been our policy to wipe Israel off the map,” a senior figure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy delivered a far more aggressive message, pledging to carry out the commands of Iran’s revolutionary leadership and “wipe Israel off the face of the earth.”
However, the IRGC’s statement, which echoed long-standing declarations from Iran’s revolutionary leadership, reinforces Tehran’s hardline posture toward Israel. The IRGC Navy’s vow to act on the directives of Iran’s Supreme Leader and his predecessor—referred to as the “two Imams of the revolution”—underscores the continued influence of ideological militancy within the country’s power structure.
