U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has ordered the repositioning of two nuclear submarines in response to comments made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
The development marks a sharp escalation in verbal hostilities between the nuclear-armed nations, even as experts caution that it does not necessarily signal an immediate military threat.

The diplomatic flare-up began after Medvedev warned Trump against provocative statements, suggesting that Russia retains powerful Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities and would not hesitate to use them if pushed. Trump, in response, issued a stern warning of his own.

“Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev… I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump said in a post on social media. “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
