Canada has launched an airdrop operation to deliver urgently needed aid into Gaza, just one day after announcing its intention to officially recognize Palestinian statehood at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. The move marks a shift in Canada’s Middle East policy and has sparked both praise and backlash from global actors, including sharp criticism from Israel.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed the operation earlier today, noting that Jordan is playing a key logistical role in assisting with the airdrop. She also shared images of Canadian aid pallets marked with the national flag, underscoring Canada’s visible commitment to easing the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The airdrop comes in response to growing international outrage over reports of famine and rising civilian deaths in the war-torn territory. Israel, facing mounting pressure from humanitarian organizations and foreign governments, has slightly relaxed its blockade to allow more food and medical supplies into Gaza. However, access through land routes remains heavily restricted.

The urgency of the situation has been underscored by previous incidents at Israeli-run aid sites, where hundreds of Palestinians were reportedly shot while attempting to access food. In response, Ottawa and several Canadian charities have called on Israel to allow the United Nations to manage aid distribution and ensure that critical supplies reach civilians safely and effectively.

Today’s Canadian-led airlift aims to deliver those supplies quickly and directly to communities in need, bypassing the political and logistical bottlenecks that have severely limited humanitarian access in recent months.

As the conflict continues, Canada’s dual action—supporting Palestinian statehood while ramping up humanitarian aid—positions it at the center of ongoing international efforts to bring relief and political resolution to one of the world’s most pressing crises.
