New Delhi — Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday echoed U.S. President Donald Trump’s damning assessment of the Indian economy, calling it “dead” and blaming the Modi government’s policies for what he described as an economic collapse engineered to benefit corporate interests.

Speaking to reporters, Gandhi responded to Trump’s recent remarks, where the U.S. President launched a harsh critique of India’s economic health and its ties with Moscow.

“Yes, he is right. Everybody knows this except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister,” Gandhi said, smiling. “Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. I’m glad that President Trump has stated a fact. The entire world knows it.”

Gandhi went on to accuse the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of deliberately damaging the economy to favor industrialist Gautam Adani, a longtime target of opposition criticism. “The BJP has finished the economy to help Adani,” he said, sharpening his attack on what the Congress party alleges is crony capitalism under the Modi administration.

Trump’s comments came a day after he imposed sweeping 25% tariffs on nearly all imports from India, escalating a growing trade standoff between Washington and New Delhi. In a fiery speech, the U.S. President labeled both India and Russia as “dead economies” and bluntly stated he “does not care” what India does in its dealings with Moscow.

Rahul Gandhi’s endorsement of Trump’s remarks adds a dramatic twist to India’s political discourse, highlighting deepening concerns about slowing growth, rising unemployment, and investor uncertainty. It also signals the Opposition’s strategy of leveraging international criticism to hold the Modi government accountable ahead of crucial state and national elections.

The BJP, however, has repeatedly dismissed such claims, insisting that India remains one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies and attributing recent economic challenges to global headwinds, including the aftermath of the pandemic and geopolitical tensions.
