A powerful undersea earthquake measuring 8.8 in magnitude has triggered a series of tsunami waves that are currently affecting parts of Russia, Japan, and the United States.
The seismic event occurred off Russia’s eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, with the epicenter located approximately 136 kilometers (84 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The impact was immediate and widespread. Japan’s Meteorological Agency quickly issued a tsunami advisory across much of its eastern coastline, warning of potentially dangerous waves reaching up to three meters (nearly 10 feet) in height. Coastal communities are on high alert, with authorities urging residents to evacuate to higher ground.

Tsunami waves have already reached parts of Japan, and similar reports are emerging from Russia’s Pacific coastline and Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. In the United States, tsunami advisories have been extended along much of the West Coast, while regions in the Pacific—such as Taiwan, the Philippines, and Hawaii—have also been placed under warnings or advisories due to the potential threat of incoming waves.
